Finding help can seem like a daunting task in Japan, but there are a few places to find counsellors. The CLAIR Mental Health Support service is provided free for current participants of the JET Programme. Click here for more information on how the service works. Want to find your own counsellor? The links below can help.

International Mental Health Professionals Japan

A professional organization that maintains its own standards for qualification and continuing education for ex-pat counselors and therapists residing in Japan. The homepage has a database, searchable by location and preferred language, that may help find a counselor in your specific area. Be aware, however, that the numbers are still small, and mostly concentrated in urban areas.

Tokyo English Life Line (TELL)

"TELL is dedicated to providing effective support and counseling services to Japan's international community and its increasing mental health needs".

TELL is completely independent of the JET Programme and the Japanese government. It is a volunteer run service provided by a Tokyo-based, non-profit organisation. Any English speaker in Japan can receive free counselling via telephone or chat. English-speaking volunteers can be contacted at 03-5774-0992 daily from 09:00 until 23:00, and the chat service is available from 22:30 to 2:00 every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Volunteers undergo a 12-week in-house training program before taking calls. Callers remain anonymous.
